Water regularly during establishment and dry periods, especially for container plants. Once established, Natal-Plum is quite drought-tolerant, requiring less frequent watering. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. Reduce watering slightly in cooler months if growth slows, but do not allow the soil to dry out completely.

Prune to shape, control size, or remove dead/damaged branches. Best done after fruiting or in late winter/early spring before new growth. Can be heavily pruned for hedges or espaliers. Wear gloves due to thorns and milky sap. Regular tip pruning encourages bushier growth and more flowers.

Propagate Natal-Plum from semi-hardwood cuttings taken in summer or by seed. Cuttings root best with rooting hormone and bottom heat. Seeds should be cleaned of pulp and sown in a well-draining mix; germination can be slow and erratic. Air layering is also a viable method for larger plants.

Repot container-grown Natal-Plum every 2-3 years or when root-bound. Choose a pot one size larger with good drainage. Use a high-quality, well-draining potting mix. Repotting is best done in spring. After repotting, water thoroughly and place in a shaded spot for a week to reduce stress before returning to its usual location.
