New England Asters prefer consistently moist soil, especially during dry periods and while establishing. Water deeply once or twice a week, ensuring the soil is thoroughly saturated.

Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases. Established plants can tolerate some drought, but regular moisture promotes healthier growth and more abundant blooms.

Pinch back stems by half in late spring or early summer (before mid-July) to encourage bushier growth and prevent flopping. This also delays flowering slightly.

After flowering, cut back spent stems to the ground in late autumn or early spring to promote new growth and maintain plant vigor. Deadheading spent flowers is not strictly necessary but can improve appearance.

New England Asters can be propagated by division every 2-3 years in early spring or fall to maintain vigor. They can also be grown from seed, which requires a period of cold stratification.

Cuttings can be taken in late spring or early summer, rooting readily in a moist, well-drained medium with rooting hormone.
